Horse gets rabies in Phelps CountyHOLDREGE, Neb. (AP)--A horse was found to have rabies in Phelps County, officials said. The horse, which was reported to the Two Rivers Health Department on May 9, most likely was bitten by a skunk, said Terry Krohn, director of the health department. The animal has been euthanized, she said. The animal was acting aggressively, couldn't eat or drink and produced much salivation. Krohn said this is a reminder that livestock can get rabies, often from skunk bites. People should take precaution when handling any animal that is acting strangely, she said. So far this year, there have been 24 reported cases of rabies in the state, according to the Nebraska Department of Agriculture. Six of those cases were in cattle and three were in horses, the department said. Date: 5/25/05
