Governor Heineman kicks off "National Turkey Lovers' Month"

Nebraska

Governor Dave Heineman proclaimed June "National Turkey Lovers' Month" in a luncheon sponsored by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA), Poultry and Egg Division May 13 at the governor's residence.

"The turkey industry is an important part of Nebraska's economic landscape with cash receipts totaling more than $38 million in 2004," Governor Heineman said. "It's my pleasure to join Nebraska's turkey producers today in celebrating their industry's many accomplishments."

Ken Gleaves of Nebraska Turkey Ranch, Gibbon, presented Governor Heineman with a Norbest Smoked Turkey and a new Norbest Oven Roasted Turkey, in recognition of the governor's support for the turkey industry.

The state's 17 turkey growers, who are members of the Nebraska Turkey Growers Cooperative, raised over 3.1 million turkeys in 2004, producing more than 53 million pounds of turkey. The majority of these turkeys are packaged under the Norbest Nebraska-grown label.

Additional information about Nebraska's turkey industry is available through NDA's Poultry and Egg Division by calling 402-472-2051, or visiting www.agr.ne.gov.
