Wheat harvest off to slow start with rains

Widespread showers throughout the state limited producers to 3.6 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending June 19, and hail damage and high winds were reported in western parts of the state according to the Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service, June 20.

Topsoil moisture was rated 1 percent very short, 7 percent short, 70 percent adequate, and 22 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 3 percent very short, 18 percent short, 67 percent adequate, and 12 percent surplus.

Ninety-eight percent of the Wheat is turning, compared with 100 percent last year and 98 percent for the five-year average. Sixty-five percent of the Wheat is ripe, 23 points behind last year and 1 point behind the five-year average. Ten percent of the Wheat has been harvested, 26 points behind last year and 16 points behind the five-year average. Wheat condition is rated 6 percent very poor, 19 percent poor, 39 percent fair, 30 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Disease reports indicate 49 percent with no presence, 29 percent with light presence, 18 percent with moderate presence, and 4 percent with severe presence. Insect reports indicate 75 percent with no infestation, 20 percent with light infestation, 4 percent with moderate infestation, and 1 percent with severe infestation.

Four percent of the corn has silked, compared to 7 percent last year and 3 percent for the five-year average. Corn condition is rated 5 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 11 percent excellent. Eighty-four percent of soybeans have been planted, 6 points behind last year and 7 points behind the five-year average.

Seventy-nine percent of the soybeans have emerged, compared with 81 percent last year and 83 percent for the five-year average. Soybean condition is rated 5 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 56 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Eighty-one percent of sorghum has been planted, compared with 87 percent last year and 89 percent for the five-year average. Sixty-seven percent of the sorghum has emerged, 7 points behind last year and 9 points behind the five-year average. Sorghum condition is rated 3 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 64 percent good, and 4 percent excellent.

Sixty-four percent of cotton has been planted, 35 points behind last year and 27 points behind the five-year average. One percent of the cotton is squaring, compared with 6 percent last year and 2 percent for the five-year average. Cotton condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 47 percent good, and 18 percent excellent. Seventy-six percent of the sunflowers have been planted, compared with 72 percent last year and 81 percent for the five-year average. Sixty-one percent of the sunflowers have emerged, 16 points ahead of last year and 6 points ahead of the five-year average. Ninety-eight percent of the first cutting alfalfa has been harvested, compared with 100 percent last year and 99 percent for the five-year average. Thirty percent of the second cutting alfalfa has been harvested, 1 point ahead of last year and 3 points ahead of the five-year average.

Pasture and range conditions are rated 2 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 35 percent fair, 47 percent good, and 7 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies are rated 2 percent very short, 5 percent short, 90 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies are rated 1 percent very short, 5 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus. Stock water supplies are rated 1 percent very short, 9 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus.
