Weather allows for progress in the fieldsKansas Dry and hot conditions allowed producers 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending July 17, with Wheat harvesting and alfalfa cutting the main activities, according to the Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service, July 18. Topsoil moisture was rated 4 percent very short, 45 percent short, 50 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 5 percent very short, 32 percent short, 62 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. One hundred percent of the Wheat has been harvested, 2 points ahead of last year but the same as the five-year average. Seventy-four percent of the corn has silked, the same as last year but 3 points ahead of the five-year average. Fifteen percent of the corn is in the dough stage, 2 points behind last year but 1 point ahead of the five-year average. Corn condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Ninety-nine percent of the soybeans have emerged, the same for both last year and the five-year average. Forty-four percent of the soybeans are blooming, 14 points behind last year and 9 points behind the five-year average. Nine percent of the soybeans are setting pods, compared with 13 percent for both last year and the five-year average. Soybean condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 36 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 8 percent excellent. Ninety-nine percent of the soybeans have emerged, the same for both last year and the five-year average. Forty-four percent of the soybeans are blooming, 14 points behind last year and 9 points behind the five-year average. Sorghum condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 32 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 8 percent excellent. Twenty-nine percent of the cotton is squaring, compared with 49 percent last year and 43 percent for the five-year average. Cotton condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 11 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. One hundred percent of the sunflowers have been planted, compared with 98 percent last year and the same as the five-year average. Ninety-six percent of the sunflowers have emerged, 8 points ahead of last year and the same as the five-year average. Pasture and range conditions are rated 2 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 47 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies are rated 2 percent very short, 6 percent short, 89 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies are rated 1 percent very short, 4 percent short, 86 percent adequate, and 9 percent surplus. Stock water supplies are rated 2 percent very short, 12 percent short, 82 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Date: 7/19/05
