Veterinarian hired to address statewide homeland security issues

Colorado

Bill Bennett of Eaton, Colo., is the new homeland security veterinarian with the Colorado Department of Agriculture.

"Bill brings nearly three decades of experience in animal health," said Don Ament, commissioner of agriculture at the Colorado Department of Agriculture. "His knowledge at all levels of the cattle industry will help us strive to better protect our consumers and the public against bioterrorism."

In his new position, Bennett will educate members of the livestock industry on the development of Colorado's preparedness strategy, which includes prevention, preparedness, response and recovery of livestock diseases. He will focus on integrating plans, procedures, and communication with local, regional, state and federal agencies.

"During the past four years, more and more farmers and ranchers are understanding the importance of agrosecurity," said Bennett. "It's important for us to continue and inform the people within our industry as well as the public because agriculture has an impact on our daily lives."

Throughout his career, he has given more than 250 presentations to state and national audiences on various agricultural issues. Bennett received his bachelor's and veterinary medical degrees from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo. He was raised on a ranch in southeast Colorado.

Before joining CDA, he was manager of quality assurance for Swift and Company for nearly six years. In addition to operating a family ranch in Eaton that has Quarter horses and produces forage crops, he has worked for ConAgra Refrigerated Foods Division, SmithKline Beecham Animal Health and Monfort of Colorado-Feedlots Division.
