NFU disappointed in decision to open Canadian borderThe National Farmers Union expressed disappointment July 15 in the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision to reopen cattle trade with Canada. The organization again called upon Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns to implement mandatory country-of-origin labeling (COOL). "I think it is premature to reopen the border to Canadian cattle," said NFU President Dave Frederickson. "However, in light of yesterday's court decision and Secretary Johanns decision to proceed immediately with the reopening, I believe it is vital for USDA to fast forward the implementation of mandatory COOL." NFU said that the implementation of COOL is essential so that U.S. consumers can differentiate high quality U.S. products from foreign products. Frederickson said he is also concerned by the potential negative impacts the expected flood of Canadian imports will have on U.S. producers, especially at a time when our largest export markets remain closed. NFU is asking the USDA to proceed with caution to ensure that the border reopening does not devastate U.S. cattle prices. "American producers and consumers expect and deserve reassurance that their interests are being put above and before the interests of other countries," Frederickson said. "We must make sure consumers know that their beef supply is safe while protecting the economic livelihood of U.S. cattle producers." Date: 7/20/05
