Yellow Wheat becoming increasingly prominentBy Joe Raff CEA-Ag Wichita County We have an increasing amount of yellow Wheat in the surrounding area. Earlier this fall it was mainly due to the absence of sun light and our extreme wet conditions. Today it can be the result of several things beginning with nitrogen. Because of the raising price of N, most of us skimped or even skipped our fall application (and we are paying for it now). We also have some greenbugs in the area that are getting in large enough numbers to damage some Wheat (more cost). And with our wet conditions all fall and into January, we got rust like we have never seen it before. All in part or individually are damaging some Wheat in the county. With all this good news we are forced to make some tough decisions. And the best way to make these decisions is to attend the Advanced Topics Series. The ATS will be offered in Vernon Feb. 8 and 9 at the research center. At the ATS you will work your own budget and review some marketing tools that may be of use this marketing year. There is no better way to prepare yourself for this challenging year then to attend this two day program. The Texoma Farm and Ranch Show will start at 7 a.m. on Feb. 16 with the Growers Breakfast in Room 10. This years keynote speaker will be Senator Todd Staples. The senator is a very entertaining speaker that will address current issues facing Texas. This event has grown year after year, so as a change for this year; you must have a ticket to get into the breakfast. Following Senator Staples will be the CEU Training starting at 9:30 a.m. in the auditorium. We will offer 3 CEU's (one in Laws and Regs, one in IPM and one in General) and the cost is $10 per person. Dr.Travis Miller, department head, soil and crop sciences TAMU will talk soil fertility and leaching. Dr. Todd Baughman, extension agronomist, will talk about weeds in cotton and wheat. Next, will be Ed Dowty, inspector for Texas Department of Agriculture, and he will talk about Laws and Regulation. The largest event we had last year was our Wild Hog meeting. This year starting at 1 p.m. on the Feb. 16 we are going a step further with a two hour wild hog meeting with the best wildlife manager in Texas, Dr. Dale Rollins, professor and extension specialist--Wildlife TAMU. Rollins will be talking specifically on marketing/hunting of wild hogs and how to fit them into your wildlife plan. Following Rollins will be Scott Showers, Cargill Consultant and Animal Nutritionist. Scott was a larger part of our first wild hog meeting and will address the trapping part of a wild hog management program. Year after year some of the best comments come from the live cattle demonstration which will start at 1 p.m. in the west parking lot. Dr. Ron Gill, Extension livestock specialist, and Kevin Przilas, sale representative InterVet will focus on vaccine handling, chute-side manners and beef quality assurance. A must see at the show. This program is sponsored by LINN chutes and the cattle are always donated by Keith Meadows. One of the largest topics I get calls on this last year was on the animal ID program. To address this issue will be none other then our state veterinarian, for Texas Animal Health Commission, Dr. Bob Hillman. Starting at 3 p.m., Hillman will discuss the program that is piloted in Texas and will answer your questions on what the mandatory animal ID program could look like. The day will conclude at 5 p.m. with Shelly Plante, Texas Parks and Wildlife--Nature Tourism Coordinator for the Wildlife Diversity Program. Plante will discuss her project as well as address some ideas that can be incorporated into a management plan here in North Texas. On Feb. 17, the CEU training will begin at 8 a.m. and cost $10 per person. As on the 16th, we will offer three CEU's one in Laws and Regs, one in General and one in IPM. The first speaker will be Rob Borchordt, AgriPro Wheat, and will be followed by Dr. David Worrall of AgriPro. Ed Dowty will give one more CEU on Laws and Regulations. Purina and Berend's have been long time supporters of the Texoma Farm and Ranch Show. And they will be sponsoring the two big programs on the 17th. The new horse program that we had last year was such a success, we have continued it again. The program will be conducted by Chad Brown, district representative. The program will start at 10 a.m. Starting at 1 p.m., Purina will also sponsor the management and nutrition program for deer quality.
