The combined sales volume of Wyoming, western Nebraska and western North and South Dakota auctions for the week ending Jan. 22 totaled 12,900 head, compared to 7,200 head last week and 10,200 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Torrington, Wyo.

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold generally $2 to $3 higher at the Wyoming auctions. In the direct feeder cattle trade steers and heifers were steady, with instances of $2 higher on steers. Direct trade was moderate. Demand was moderate to good. Buyer and seller inquiry was moderate. Unless otherwise noted direct prices are current FOB with a 2 to 3% shrink or equivalent and with a 5 to 10 cent slide on calves and 3 to 6 cents slide on yearlings from base weight. Steers made up 58% of the supply, heifers 42%, with 65% weighing over 600 pounds. Direct sales accounted for 5400 head of the total receipts.
