Stafford Co. couple places high in nationwide Farm Bureau contestKansas A Stafford County Farm Bureau couple has been recognized by the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) for their creative and innovative management techniques and their ability to adapt to a changing agricultural industry. Brian and Carolyn Dunn, St. John, were honored as runners-up in the national American Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers Achievement Award contest, held at the recent 86th AFBF annual meeting in Charlotte, N.C. As runners-up, the Dunn family received a Case IH DX Farmall tractor, courtesy of Case IH. In addition, Syngenta Crop Protection recognized each of the top 10 Achievement Award runners-up with a $1,500 product voucher. The Dunn's operation consists of cattle and grain production as well managing an alfalfa hay business. During the past few years, the Dunns have strived to improve the efficiency of their hay operation by pulling two swathers and cutting down loading times. Brian and Carolyn are active leaders in the Stafford County Farm Bureau, serving on the county board and participating in several events. The Achievement Award recognizes young farmers and ranchers who have excelled in their farming or ranching operations and exhibited superior leadership abilities. Participants are evaluated on a combination of the growth of their agricultural operation and financial progress, Farm Bureau leadership and leadership outside Farm Bureau. The awards are presented annually. "Just the honor of competing and representing Kansas at the national level in these YF&R contests is impressive and we are so proud of the Dunns for their achievement," said Steve Baccus, an Ottawa County grain producer who serves as president of Kansas Farm Bureau. "With young leaders the caliber of Brian and Carolyn Dunn in our organization, then Farm Bureau's future is in very good hands." In addition to the Achievement Award, Kansas was well represented in two other national YF&R contests. Sedgwick County Farm Bureau member Meghan Mueseler won the state Excellence in Agriculture contest and Jackson County FB member Erika Bowser won the state Discussion Meet. Both of these Young Farmers and Ranchers represented Kansas at the national competitions in Charlotte this year. Date: 1/27/05
