St. Onge cattle sales report

The St. Onge Livestock Sales Co., Ltd., St. Onge, S.D., reported receipts of 1,464 head Jan. 21, compared to 1,327 head last week and 3,035 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Feeder calves were too few to test. Boner slaughter cows sold steady with last week's limited numbers while lean cows sold $2 to $3 higher. Slaughter bulls sold $1 higher. A large number of buyers present for the bred cow sale. Demand was good. Feeder receipts included 68% steers and 32% heifers, with 68% over 600 pounds. Receipts were about 57% bred females, 18% slaughter cows, 14% feeders, 7% replacement females and 2% slaughter bulls. Most of the weigh-up cows went to slaughter.

Feeder steers: Medium and large frame 1, 5 head, 346 lbs., 152.00; 7 head, 436 lbs., 136.00; 5 head, 464 lbs., 141.00; 15 head, 619 lbs., 116.50; 13 head, 661 lbs., 107.75 full; 16 head, 750 lbs., 100.25 full. Medium and large frame 1 and 2, 11 head, 722 lbs., 100.75; 5 head, 873 lbs., 95.00.

Feeder heifers: Medium and large frame 1, 11 head, 424 to 430 lbs., 126.00 to 127.00 (126.28); 5 head, 801 lbs., 86.75 full. Medium and large frame 1 and 2, 8 head, 366 lbs., 132.00; 6 head, 607 to 638 lbs., 103.50 to 105.00 (104.23); 6 head, 657 lbs., 98.50.

Slaughter cows: Breakers, 75 to 80% lean, 1700 to 2045 lbs., 53.00 to 54.50; low dressing, 51.50. Boners, 80 to 85 lbs., 1118 to 1660 lbs., 54.00 to 56.50; low dressing, 52.50 to 53.00. Lean, 85 to 90% lean, 885 to 1480 lbs., 50.00 to 55.50; high dressing, 56.00 to 57.00; low dressing, 44.50 to 49.50.

Replacement females: Medium and large frame 1 and 2, heifers, 830 to 1065 lbs., 81.50 to 89.00, few 91.00 to 94.00; 2 years old, 720 to 1203 lbs., 68.00 to 76.00; heiferettes, 1010 to 1350 lbs., 55.00 to 65.00, few 66.00 to 68.50; feeder cows, 1298 to 1364 lbs., 56.50 to 57.50.

Bred females: Large frame 1, calve March 6 to April 1, 60 head, Heifers. 1063 to 1155 lbs., black, bred black 1100.00 to 1200.00; 27 head, 3 to 5 years old, 1385 to 1427 lbs., black, bred black 995.00 to 1150.00; 32 head, solid to short solid, 1375 to 1381 lbs., black whiteface, bred black 1070.00 to 1075.00; 21 head, solid to short solid, 1463 to 1490 lbs., black-black whiteface, bred black 810.00 to 885.00; 20 head, solid to short solid, 1408 to 1529 lbs., red, bred red/black 795.00 to 800.00; 150 head, broken, 1379 to 1557 lbs., mixed, bred red/black 720.00 to 820.00. Medium and large frame 1, calve March 1 to April 1, 34 head, heifers, 934 to 1003 lbs., black, bred black 970.00 to 1035.00; 64 head, 3 years old, 1053 to 1284 lbs., black/red, bred black/red 980.00 to 1150.00; 12 head, 4 to 5 years old, 1146 to 1253 lbs., black/red, bred black 860.00 to 935.00; 31 head, solid, 1272 to 1352 lbs., black, bred black 900.00 to 1000.00; 46 head, solid to short solid, 1256 to 1339 lbs., black-black whiteface, bred black/Hereford 785.00 to 870.00; 100 head, broken, 1188 to 1372 lbs., mixed, bred black 720.00 to 785.00. Medium and large frame 1 and 2, calve March 15 to April 1, 96 head, broken, 1064 to 1272 lbs., mixed, bred black 590.00 to 710.00 thin.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 and 2, 1385 to 2155 lbs., 65.50 to 67.50; high dressing, 69.75; low dressing, 61.00 to 64.75.
