Ranchers form new cattlemen's groupNORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP)--Ranchers are forming a new beef group in the state to address issues specific to ranchers. The Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska announced its formation Jan. 19. It will be an affiliate of the national group Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund, United Stockgrowers of America, said board member Chris Abbott. There are several pressing issues the cattle industry faces, Abbott said, including whether to re-open the trade border with Canada, country-of-origin labeling and animal identification programs. Cattlemen must be represented by a group that addresses their concerns and not those of the entire industry, which includes meat packing, he said. "We feel that it is important that the independent Nebraska cattlemen have a voice that represents only their needs," Abbott said. The group plans to add several more board members and release further details in the next two to three weeks, Abbott said. The Nebraska Cattlemen's Association said it is not sure what the new group means by addressing only ranchers' concerns, spokesman Mike Fitzgerald said. Date: 1/26/05
