Profitability, sustainability topics of Grand Island conferenceNebraska Profitable and sustainable agricultural opportunities will be the theme of the Rural Advantage Conference Feb. 4 and 5 in Grand Island. The conference, at the Interstate Holiday Inn, will focus on emerging income opportunities for agricultural producers and rural residents. Nebraska, regionally and nationally known speakers will share their experiences and knowledge. Robert Waldrop, president of the Oklahoma Food Co-op, will speak Feb. 4 at the All Nebraska Sustainable Banquet, on the topic "Increasing Accessibility of Locally Grown Food Through the Oklahoma Food Co-op." Conference session titles include: From Production to Profit in Ranching, Financing Non-traditional Crops Via Traditional Methods: A Banker's View, Growing Fruits and Vegetables: What Works and What Doesn't, Grant Programs That Support Alternative Agricultural Enterprises, Raising Meat Goats for Niche Markets, Ecotourism: What it is and What it Can Do For You, Wine Trail Tourism in Nebraska and Aquaculture: Switching from Swine to Swimmers. A $55 registration fee covers the two-day conference, if paid by Jan. 28; the fee increases to $70 after that. The Feb. 4, Friday night All-Nebraska banquet costs $25 more. Participants also can sign up for either day, at $30. Registration should be done through Zoubek at the York County Extension Office, 2345 Nebraska Ave., York, NE 68467.
