Pecan growers to vote on assessment, commodity boardOklahoma State pecan growers will receive ballots later this week to vote on whether or not they want an assessment of one-half cent per pound on pecans to fund research and extension efforts to promote production and marketing. Growers are also being asked to elect six producers to the Oklahoma Pecan Commodity Board. Six names are included on the ballot but producers may write in other candidates if desired. Mike Schulte, Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry Marketing Coordinator, said producers should receive the ballots by Feb. 1 and must return them by close of business, Feb. 18. Eligible voters include all Oklahoma pecan growers who have more than 15 acres of pecans or more than 225 pecan trees. Pecan growers with less production are not allowed to vote but will be exempt from the half-cent per pound assessment. Additional ballots are available at county extension offices. If a pecan orchard is owned by more than one person, these ballots can be used by the co-owner. Current names on the ballots for board positions include: Doug Pittman, Bixby; Robert Schoenecke, Meeker; Ulrich Young, Sparks; Scott Landgraf, Madill; Randy Bryant, Ada; and Kearby L. Weatherly, Okmulgee. Date: 1/27/05
