Texas Cooperative Extension names new Irion County agent

Texas

Joe M. Self, Jr. becomes Texas Cooperative Extension's new agriculture and natural resources agent for Irion County Feb. 15, according to a joint announcement made by County Judge Leon Standard and Scott Durham, Extension district administrator.

His office will be in the Irion County Courthouse Annex.

"We feel Joe is the right young man for this key position," said Durham. "He was raised in nearby San Angelo, so he knows this area well. He has a strong background in 4-H, Extension's youth program. He's also very familiar with Extension's other educational areas and with many of the Extension personnel he will be working with.

"We are happy that Joe will be in District 7, the district he was raised in. He will no doubt be a real asset to Extension and to Irion County, one of our region's most progressive rural counties."

Self earned a bachelor's degree in animal science from Angelo State University in 2002. He is currently completing studies toward a master's degree in animal science from the university.

He served as a graduate teaching assistant while attending ASU. He also assisted in coaching the university's wool judging team, assisted with research projects and was a member of the breeding sheep show team.

Self's other work experience includes an internship with the San Antonio Livestock Show Breeding Sheep Show. The internship required that he be responsible for all facets of putting on the show from assigning stalls to helping in the ring.

Self fills the position vacated by Marc Tucker, who resigned to enter the banking business in Lubbock.
