Kansas

Subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) meeting and exhibit titled: Managing Subsurface Drip Irrigation will be presented by K-State Research and Extension March 3 at 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Haskell County Fair Building, Sublette, Kan. This is a regional meeting and the only one planned for this spring.

Irrigators of western Kansas find it necessary to conserve water to prolong the life of the Ogallala aquifer. Conscientious producers are adopting SDI as an alternative method of irrigation. The acres under SDI are steadily going up. The estimated acreage is about 10,000 acres at present. K-State Research has shown that 25 percent or more water savings are possible by using this new technique. Producers using SDI report a savings of 50 percent when compared to flood irrigation.

Producers using SDI report a 10- to 15-bushels yield increase for corn. But, SDI system requires a high dollar investment and to be able to pay off it is necessary to have a prolonged life for the system. It is necessary to learn how to manage SDI for longevity. Clogging is a major issue that may cause system failure. The meeting will focus on this and other issues.

Topics included are: SDI Design for Optimum Management, Filtration for Successful SDI System, Special Water Quality Considerations for SDI, Use of SDI for Alternative Crops like Alfalfa and Cotton, and Economics of SDI. Professors Freddie Lamm and Danny Rogers, and area Extension specialist Mahbub Alam will be presenting. The meeting will be rounded off with a panel discussion participation by area producers using SDI and industry and service providers representatives. Industry will set-up exhibits to show the use and possibilities of subsurface drip irrigation.

Please call Carla Nemecek, county Extension agent in Haskell County for pre-registration and meal planning, phone 620-675- 2261
