Spring forage conference in Springfield features Kit Pharo

Missouri

The 21st annual Southwest Missouri Spring Forage Conference will be 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 2, at the University Plaza Hotel in Springfield, Mo.

"Each year this conference attracts an increasing number of producers interested in learning more about management strategies for both forages and livestock. With another informative and interesting agenda for 2005, the event should be well worth attending," said Dr. Gordon Carriker, agriculture business specialist, University of Missouri Extension.

This year's keynote speaker will be Kit Pharo, owner of the Pharo Cattle Company located in eastern Colorado.

"Kit speaks at numerous events around the country and anyone involved in raising cattle most likely knows his name. He publishes a bi-monthly newsletter about his operation and his knowledge of the cattle industry. He is a strong believer in focusing on profits, properly utilizing and managing the forages that are produced, and managing and developing a quality cow and bull herd," said Carriker.

Several breakout sessions will also be available throughout the day with topics like: Native warm season grass, managing stockpiled fescue, fencing laws, pasture record keeping, beef industry outlook, farm taxes, renovating pastures versus management of what you have now, mandatory livestock identification, and a farmer's panel on year round grazing.

Over 60 farm related companies and organizations have been invited to exhibit and discuss their products and services.

"This annual conference is a great opportunity for forage and livestock producers to learn more about the industry, find out the latest information from the exhibitors, talk to other producers, and enjoy a terrific lunch," said Carriker.

The registration cost for the conference is $20 per person ($30 at the door) and that includes a hot lunch. To pre-register, contact the Greene County Soil and Water Conservation District at 417-831-5246 extension 3.

The conference is co-sponsored by several Southwest Missouri Soil and Water Conservation Districts, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Southwest Missouri State University, University of Missouri Extension, Missouri Department of Conservation, and the USDA Farm Service Agency.
