Simmental show winners crowned at Denver

KSU Venom 101M, a coming-2-year-old Simmental bull, was named Grand Champion at the National Western Stock Show Simmental show Jan 18 in Denver, Colo. Venom, a 6.3 frame score bull, is owned by Foster Brothers and Sanders Ranch.

The Reserve Grand Champion was GWS Ebony's Trademark 6N, owned by Hearthstone Farms and Whispering Hills Farm. He is a Sept 2003, 6.2 frame score bull who also won the senior bull calf division.

Neville Speer of Bowling Green, Ky., and his associate Mat Lewis of Iliff, Colo., judged the open cattle shows.

In the Simmental female show Jan 19, the men selected SVF/NJC Expectation N206 as Grand Champion Female. The Feb. 6, 2003 bred heifer is owned by Amber Creek of Auburn, Ky. Reserve Grand Champion was Zeis Miss Ace N13 owned by Katie Ann Myers of Medora, Ind.

In the junior show the previous day, Myers' heifer was champion Simmental as selected by judge Jim Ligon, judging coach for Tennessee Tech. Reserve purebred in the junior show went to Bo Bramlet of Harrisburg, Ill. In the percentage division of the junior show, champion was captured by Charles Myerscough of Seymour, Ill., and reserve went to Ashley Moore of Rose Hill, Iowa.

High school and college students on the American Junior Simmental board and the Colorado Junior Simmental Association assisted in the ring throughout the National Western events. Hill activities were coordinated by Colorado Simmental's Tim Kochert of Greeley.

Simmental leadership changes

The American Simmental Association held its annual meeting during the National Western Stock Show activities. Robert Campbell of Ignacio, Colo., turned over the Chairman's gavel to Fred Schuetze of Granbury, Texas.

Campbell remains on the 16-member board. The western region also is represented by Curt Russell of Sugar City, Colo., Mike Stoltey of Plummer, Idaho, and Jim Skillestad of Glendive, Mont., on the Simmental board.
