Simmental pen show at NWSS includes Power Bull excitementRob Pischel of O'Neill, Neb., was drawn as the Power Bull winner during the National Western Stock Show. The Power Bull, a new event sponsored by Colorado Simmental Association during the breed's pen show on Jan 17, allowed the crowd to judge the top ranch-nominated bulls. More than 100 cattlemen chose to participate in the event, in which Pischel won his selection of a bull, complete with possession and 2/3 semen interest. He selected J&C Pontiac P213 from J&C Simmental of Arlington, Neb. The bull was one of the top four vote-getters in the People's Choice selection. Other top bulls were exhibited by Grass-Lunning of Leroy, Minn., Triple C Farms of Maple Plain, Minn., and Redalen Cattle Co., of Fountain, Minn. Dr. Jerry Lipsey, American Simmental Executive Vice-President from Bozeman, Mont., drew out Pischel as the winning name. J&C Simmentals received $10,000 for the bull in the new event. "Power Bull created excitement among the crowd and the breeders, plus it allowed more audience participation," said Susan Russell, Colorado Simmental secretary who coordinated the event. Pfizer Animal Health and Stockman's Supply were sponsors of Power Bull, which CSA will offer again next year. Ron Mari of Holyoke, Colo., was the CSA pen chairman. In the pen show itself, the Champion Pen of 5 purebred pen was exhibited by Grass-Lunning and reserve was JDJ Ranch of Evart, Mich. The Champion Pen of 3 purebred pen was exhibited by Hale Ranch of Perrytown, Texas and reserve was Grindstone Creek Farms of Sturgeon, Mo. The Champion Pen of 3 percentage pen was won by J&C Simmental and reserve was Deiter Brothers of Faulkton, S.D. Steve Reimer of South Dakota was the pen judge, with Joel DeRouchey of Kansas serving as his associate. Both judges used EPD data along with visual appraisal when they evaluated the 33 pens in the Simmental show. Date: 2/24/05
