Secretary of Ag Johanns to address March Governor's Ag ConferenceLINCOLN, Neb. (AP)--Secretary of Agriculture and former Nebraska Gov. Mike Johanns will be the keynote speaker for the Governor's Ag Conference in March. Johanns will present updates on agricultural issues important to the nation and Nebraska, said Gov. Dave Heineman Feb. 16. President Bush recently appointed Johanns to his Cabinet. Heineman, then lieutenant governor, took over for Johanns. The conference, entitled "Leadership Today, Vision for Tomorrow," will take place March 2 and 3 in Kearney. Also scheduled to be at the conference is Nancy Pellett, chairman of the nation's Farm Credit Administration. Pellett will talk about the role of the Farm Credit system and her appearance should have some resonance with Nebraska farmers. Omaha's Farm Credit Services of America created a stir last year when it proposed leaving the national system to merge with a Dutch bank. The deal ultimately fell through. Among other speakers scheduled is an executive from McDonalds, who will talk about the importance of traceability and requirements for source verification in the nation's food supply. Date: 2/23/05
