Second youth beef leadership symposium offered in AprilNebraska High school juniors, seniors and junior college students can learn more about becoming a leader in the beef industry at the Nebraska Youth Beef Leadership Symposium in April. The second annual educational symposium will be April 17 to 19 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Animal Science Complex. The symposium will include leadership presentations, industry information/discussions, interactions with university animal science faculty and students, and a chance to see parts of the UNL campus, including Memorial Stadium, said Don Beermann, head of UNL's animal science department in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. "This program will help students define their career paths and encourage their interests in pursuing a college degree while at the same time enhancing their capabilities for becoming a leader in the beef industry," Beermann said. "In addition, students will experience a dynamic education experience that focuses on current beef industry issues." Registration of $50 must be received by March 15. It includes all materials, meals and lodging. For more information about the symposium, schedule details or a registration form visit the Web at http://animalscience.unl.edu/youth/beefsymp.htm or contact Beermann at C203 Animal Science, P.O. Box 830908, Lincoln, NE 68583-0908, call 402-472-3571 or e-mail dbeermann2@unl.edu. UNL's departments of animal science and agricultural leadership, education; the Nebraska Beef Council; Nebraska Cattlemen Research and Education Foundation, Nebraska Corn Board and others teamed up to sponsor the symposium. "A statewide leadership symposium has been a goal of these organizations and the university for some time," said Sallie Atkins, executive director of the Nebraska Beef Council. "Building on the success of last year's symposium, we are pleased to be supporting this opportunity again for students. Students are an integral part of the future of the beef industry, and this symposium will strengthen their knowledge of the beef industry and generate excitement in career opportunities." Registration is from 1 to 2 p.m. April 17 at the Cornhusker Hotel. The symposium begins that afternoon with beef production and leadership workshops. The symposium will conclude by 1 p.m. April 19 following an awards luncheon. Date: 2/24/05
