School districts encouraged to participate in biodiesel programNebraska The Nebraska Soybean Board (NSB) is encouraging all school districts in Nebraska to participate in their "Take Soy Biodiesel to School" reimbursement program. Any school district in the state of Nebraska that would like to test the use of soy biodiesel in their school bus fleets can participate. Soy biodiesel is a clean burning alternative diesel fuel made from soybeans grown right here in Nebraska. Soy biodiesel is biodegradable, nontoxic and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics. It has been proven to be a safe and efficient alternative to diesel fuel. Using soy biodiesel helps reduce harmful school bus emissions, benefiting the health of school children, drivers and staff that can be exposed to hazardous exhaust. Biodiesel contains no petroleum, but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a biodiesel blend. It can be used in existing diesel engines with little or no modifications. Biodiesel is safe, available, renewable, and dependable. Through the "Take Soy Biodiesel to School" program, participating schools will be reimbursed any cost difference between standard diesel fuel and soy biodiesel blended at a 2 percent level (B-2) up to a 5 percent level (B-5). Claims for reimbursement will be capped at the 5 percent blend level. The Nebraska Soybean Board is funding this program through Nebraska soybean producer checkoff dollars. Program funding is available now through Sept. 30. The program is now in its second year. Last year, 16 school districts across the state participated in the program. "We would definitely like to see more school districts participating and taking advantage of this great opportunity," said Greg Greving, NSB director and New Uses Committee chairman from Chapman. "The school districts across Nebraska that participated last year are true leaders and we have received nothing but positive feedback from them." Statistics, fuel specifications and other information regarding soy biodiesel can be found on the NSB's website at http://nesoybeans.unl.edu. If your school district is interested, you can also go to the NSB's website to download a program application and receive further details about the program. Questions about this program can also be directed toward Victor Bohuslavsky at 800-852-2326. Nebraska Soybean Board members are responsible for administering the state's share of the one-half of one percent national check-off on soybeans produced in Nebraska. The funds are invested in research, marketing and promotion projects for soybeans. Date: 2/23/05
