Premise ID applications availableKansas Producers wishing to get their premise identification completed can now do so via forms from the Kansas Animal Health Department (KAHD). The process is not lengthy, but it will take some coordination on your part to make sure the you have all of the necessary contact information for their records. Tenants and landlords should also plan to coordinate efforts so that landowners can have premises registered yet the appropriate operator can be identified in case of an animal disease outbreak. The purpose of the program is not collection of producer information, but tracking of movement of animals in the case of an animal disease outbreak. The goal of animal health officials is to be able to determine the whereabouts of any and all animals associated or in contact with a suspected herd/animal within 48 hours of finding the disease. The goal of the KAHD is to complete as many premise identifications as is possible by July 1, 2005. Producers can register their premise via paperwork available in the Extension office and various other livestock businesses in the area or on the Web at http://nais.aphis.usda.gov/NAIS/index.jsp/state=ks. This site will require you to set up a new user account and then allow registration after that. Contact the Animal Health Department, your producer organization, or your Extension office for details.
