St. Onge livestock market report

The St. Onge Livestock Sales Co., Ltd., St. Onge, S.D., reported receipts of 1,631 head Dec. 16, compared to 1,796 head last week and 1,097 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Compared to last week, steer calves weighing under 650 pounds sold $1 to $3 higher. Heifer calves under 600 pounds sold $4 to $6 higher. No test on heavier calves and yearlings due to light receipts. Slaughter cows sold steady to $2 higher with the lean cows showing the gain. Feeder receipts included 58% steers and 42% heifers, with 55% over 600 pounds. The offering included 73% feeders, 11% slaughter cows, 10% females back to the country, 1% slaughter bulls and the balance was feeder bulls, pairs and bred cows. Buyer attendance was good with good demand.

Feeder steers: Medium and large frame 1, 13 head, 405 to 424 lbs., 160.00 to 163.50 (160.78); 453 to 485 lbs., 144.00 to 147.00 (145.14); 504 to 540 lbs., 140.00 to 145.50 (143.11); 581 to 592 lbs., 126.00 to 134.00 (131.92); 602 to 637 lbs., 124.00 to 125.75 (125.59) calves; 651 to 690 lbs., 114.25 to 121.75 (118.53) calves; 651 to 690 lbs., 114.25 to 116.50 (115.28) fleshy; 712 to 748 lbs., 112.00 to 117.25 (114.17) calves; 15 head, 716 lbs., 120.50 fancy; 757 to 796 lbs., 110.75 to 112.50 (111.66) calves. Medium and large frame 1 and 2, 12 head, 401 to 442 lbs., 155.00 to 156.00 (155.61); 521 to 547 lbs., 137.75 to 139.00 (138.13); 18 head, 575 to 599 lbs., 121.50 to 122.50 (122.03); 6 head, 686 lbs., 113.00 calves. Medium frame 3, 5 head, 571 lbs., 77.00 thin; 9 head, 613 lbs., 84.00 thin.

Feeder heifers: Medium and large frame 1, 422 to 446 lbs., 139.00 to 142.00 (140.61); 16 head, 462 to 487 lbs., 140.00 to 144.00 (141.80); 502 to 549 lbs., 135.00 to 141.50 (138.80); 553 to 570 lbs., 130.75 to 132.50 (131.49); 600 to 638 lbs., 117.00 to 119.50 (117.64) calves; 607 to 617 lbs., 124.00 to 125.50 (124.52) replacement; 10 head, 737 lbs., 111.75; 703 to 746 lbs., 108.00 to 110.00 (109.32) calves; 6 head, 814 lbs., 107.25; 862 to 899 lbs., 108.00 to 108.25 (108.20); 32 head, 971 lbs., 106.50. Medium and large frame 1 and 2, 15 head, 380 to 390 lbs., 129.00 to 137.00 (131.71); 13 head, 472 to 496 lbs., 128.50 to 138.50 (134.41); 10 head, 532 to 545 lbs., 122.50 to 128.00 (126.32); 12 head, 613 lbs., 116.50 calves. Medium frame 3, 5 head, 28 lbs., 76.50.

Slaughter cows: Breakers, 75 to 80% lean, 1540 to 1795 lbs., 49.50 to 51.00; high dressing, 53.00 to 54.00. Boners, 80 to 85% lean, 1195 to 1610 lbs., 49.00 to 52.50; high dressing, 54.50 to 58.50; low dressing, 45.50 to 48.00. Lean, 85 to 90% lean, 945 to 1465 lbs., 45.00 to 51.50; high dressing, 53.00 to 53.50; low dressing, 40.00 to 45.00.

Replacement females: Medium and large frame 1 and 2, 2 years old, 1060 to 1175 lbs., 84.00 to 93.00; heiferettes, 1103 to 1185 lbs., 64.00 to 72.00; feeder and exposed cows, Large frame 1, 1380 to 1545 lbs., 51.00 to 54.00. Medium and large frame 1 and 2, 1030 to 1360 lbs., 50.00 to 54.75, younger 56.00 to 57.50; 983 to 1200 lbs., 48.00 to 49.50 thin.

Bred heifers: Medium and large frame 1 and 2, bred black, calve March 15, per head, 10 head, 989 lbs., 1235.00; 10 head, 909 lbs., 1075.00.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 and 2, 1495 to 2500 lbs., 59.25 to 61.25; high dressing, 62.75 to 63.25; low dressing, 56.50.
