Good buyer demand seen in most trading areas

In Nebraska and the East River area of South Dakota, compared to last week, hay sales trended fully steady to firm with good buyer demand and trade activity. Pellet sales were steady with good demand and trade activity, according to the USDA-Market News Service, Dec. 16. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Northeast: Premium alfalfa, in large squares: $120-$140; good/premium, in medium and large squares: $115-$125; good, in medium and large squares: $105-$115, in large rounds: $55-$60; fair, in medium squares: $85-$91, in large rounds: $40, ground and delivered: $68-$75. Good grass, in small squares: $80-$85, in large rounds: $45-$60. Dehydrated alfalfa pellets, 17% protein: $126.

Platte Valley: Good alfalfa, in medium squares: $100, in large rounds: $60-$70; fair, in medium squares: $90, in large rounds: $40, ground and delivered: $75-$80. Dehydrated alfalfa pellets, 17% protein: $120-$122.

East River area of South Dakota: Supreme alfalfa, in large squares: $110-$125; premium: $90-$100; good: $70-$85; grinding quality: $55-$60; premium, in large rounds: $90-$100; good: $70-$85; fair/good grinding alfalfa: $50-$60; utility/fair: $40-$45. Premium grass, in large squares: $100; good grass: $75-$80; good: $70-$85, in large rounds: $65-$80; fair: $40-$55. Straw, in large rounds: $18-$20/bale. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 17% protein: $107, 15% protein: $100.

In Iowa, hay sales trended mostly steady. Demand and trade activity was good. Inquiry continues to be good. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

South central/north central: Good alfalfa, in small squares: $120, in large rounds: $55-$65; good/premium, in large squares: $105, in large rounds: $65-$85. Good/premium alfalfa-grass mix, in small squares: $120-$140. Good/premium grass, in small squares: $140.

Rock Valley: Premium alfalfa, in small squares: $100, in large squares: $100-$122.50, in large rounds: $97.50-$107.50; good: $70-$87.50; good: $74-$90. Premium alfalfa mix, in large squares: $97.50; good: $77.50, in large rounds: $72.50-$85. Premium grass, in small squares: $122.50-$125; good, in large squares: $75-$77.50, in large rounds: $70-$90. Straw, in small squares: $1.75-$2.20/bale, in large squares: $20-$27/bale, in large rounds: $25-$27.50/bale.

In Minnesota, all classes of hay sold unevenly steady on a large supply. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Good alfalfa, in small squares: $87.50-$95, in large squares: $60-$72.50, in large rounds: $62.50-$85; fair: $55; fair: $50-$60; utility: $45-$47.50. Good alfalfa mix, in small squares: $90, in large rounds: $62.50-$80. Good grass, in small squares: $70-$80, in large squares: $65, in large rounds: $27; good: $62.50-$67.50; utility: $47.50; fair: $50-$57.50; utility: $32.50-$47.50. Straw, in small squares: $2.65-$2.90/bale, in large squares: $21/bale, in large rounds: $14-$24/bale.

In Montana, the hay trade was moderate. Demand moderate to good. Inquiry moderate to good for cowmen looking to buy hay. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Premium alfalfa, in small squares: $100-$120; good, in small squares: $75-$85, in large squares: $60-$65; fair/good, in large rounds and squares: $50-$55. Utility, in large squares and rounds: $40-$50. Premium alfalfa-grass mix, in small squares: $100-$120; fair/good, in small squares: $65-$70; fair/good, in large squares: $55-$60. Premium grass, in small squares: $90-$95; good, in small squares: $80-$85. Premium timothy, 2 and 3 twine, in small squares: $120-$140. Premium timothy-mixed grass: $122. Straw: $25.

In Wyoming, western Nebraska and western South Dakota, hay trade activity is slow to moderate with prices steady. Demand moderate for cow hay and moderate to good for dairy and horse quality hay. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Eastern Wyoming: Supreme alfalfa: $90-$100; premium: $75-$85; good: $60-$75; fair: $40-$55, ground and delivered: $66-$71. Alfalfa-orchard for horses: $145. Alfalfa-timothy: $140. Timothy: $40. Certified grass: $70. Wheat straw: $35-$40. Dehydrated alfalfa pellets, 17% protein: $125.

Central/western Wyoming: Supreme alfalfa: $100; premium: $80-$90; good: $60-$75. Alfalfa-grass: $60-$65. Oat hay: $60. Mixed grass: $60. Alfalfa cubes: $90.

Western Nebraska: Horse alfalfa, in small squares: $100-$125; supreme: $90-$100; premium: $75-$85; good: $60-$70; fair: $45-$55, 50-55; utility: $35-$45, ground and delivered: $67-$78. Oat hay: $50. Millet hay: $50. Wheat straw: $25-$30. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 13% protein, less than five ton: $135, 5-12 ton: $115, over 12 ton: $105.

Western South Dakota: Premium alfalfa: $75-$90; good: $60-$75; fair: $45-$60. Premium alfalfa-grass: $80-$90; good: $60-$75. Mixed grass: $45-$60. Sorghum-sudan: $55. Millet hay: $50. Wheat straw: $45.

In Colorado, hay demand and trade activity moderate. Dairy quality hay steady, with supply getting tighter. Horse hay steady. Movement slowing down for the season. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Northeast: Supreme alfalfa, in large squares: $110-$125; premium, in large squares: $95-$110; good, in small squares: $150, in large squares: $80-$90; fair, in large squares: $70-$80; fair/utility, in large squares: $60, ground and delivered: $70-$85. Premium grass, in small squares: $140-$165. Good millet hay, in large squares: $35, in rounds: $35. Corn Stalks, in large squares: $40, in rounds: $40.

Southeast: Premium alfalfa, in large squares: $100; good, in large squares: $90; fair, in small squares: $115. Utility, in large squares: $55, ground and delivered: $75-$80. Alfalfa pellets: 15% percent: $101, 17% protein: $107. Premium grass, in small squares: $125.

Northwest/mountains areas: Premium timothy, in small squares: $110-$120, in rounds: $110.

San Luis Valley: Supreme alfalfa, in large squares: $115-$120; good, in large squares: $85-$95. Good oat hay, in large squares: $70.

Southwest: Supreme alfalfa, in large squares: $115; premium, in large squares: $105, in small squares: $140-$150; good, in large squares: $80-$85; fair, in large squares: $70-$85. Oat straw, in small squares: $130.

In Missouri, the hay supply and demand is moderate, prices are steady. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Supreme alfalfa: $120-$145; premium: $90-$125; fair/good, in rounds: $30-$80, in small and large squares and baleage: $70-$110. Good mixed alfalfa-grass, in small squares: $2.50-$3.50/bale, in large rounds: $25-$50/bale. Fair/good prairie hay: $40-$60. Good/premium brome, in large squares: $90-$100. Good brome: $40-$70. Fair brome, some mixed with grass, in rounds: $15-$30/bale. Good timothy hay, in small squares: $3-$4.50/bale. Good red clover: $25-$50. Good mixed grass, in rounds: $20-$35/bale. Fair fescue, in large rounds: $15-$25/bale. Wheat hay: $40-$60. Wheat straw, in small squares: $2.50-$3.50/bale.

In Oklahoma, alfalfa hay movement is moderate to active and prices are steady. Grass hay is active and prices are steady. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Central/western: Premium alfalfa, in large squares: $100-$120, in small squares: $100-$120; good, in large squares: $90-$110, in small squares: $100-$110, in large rounds: $80-$90; fair, in large squares: $70-$85, in large rounds: $70-$80.

Central/eastern: Wheat hay, in large round: $30-$40. Premium grass, in large squares: $70-$80, in small squares: $70-$80, in large rounds: $60-$70; good, in small squares: $65-$75, in large rounds: $50-$60; fair: $40-$50.

Panhandle/western feedlot area: Good grinding alfalfa, in the field or bale pile: $50-$65, ground and delivered: $80-$95.

In Texas, hay prices are mostly steady. Trade activity light to moderate. Demand good to very good on available offerings. Hay supplies continue light on all classes, throughout the state. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Panhandle: Supreme alfalfa, in small squares: $170-$185, in large squares: $160-$170; premium, in large squares: $140-$155, in small squares: $160-$170; good, in large squares: $120-$135, in small squares: $145-$160; fair, in small squares: $140-$150, in large squares: $95-$115, ground and delivered, north: $98-$102, south: $105-$120. Coastal bermuda, in large rounds: $85-$110. Prairie hay, in small squares: $135, in large squares; $115. Brome grass, in small squares: $150. Oat hay, in large squares: $110. Red top cane hay, in small squares: $125, in large rounds: $85-$95. Haygrazer hay, in large rounds: $72. Wheat hay, in large squares: $90-$92, in large rounds: $40-$50.

West: Supreme alfalfa, in small squares: $160-$170; premium, in small squares: $150-$160, in large squares: $140.
