Wheat bids mixed, but interest being sparked

Wheat ended Aug. 19 mixed as support came from slow producer selling, and according to the National Grain Market Summary, Aug. 22, dry weather is in the forecast for the spring Wheat area of North Dakota which will spark active harvest activity.

Weekly export inspections were reported at 13.6 million bushels which were below expectations. Corn was moderately higher due to spillover support from soybeans. Weekly export inspections came in at 29.1 million bushels which was below estimates. Soybeans saw solid gains after losing ground last week. Many parts of the soybean production areas received rain which will help improve crop conditions. Some areas did not benefit from the good rain as the crop was too far advanced. Weekly export inspections were posted at 5.5 million bushels.

Wheat was 5 cents lower to 6 cents higher. Corn was mostly 2 to 7 cents higher. Sorghum was 4 to 16 cents higher. Soybeans were 8 to 16 cents higher.

Grains inspected for export for week ending Aug. 18: Wheat totaled 13.6 million bushels, down 7.5 million bushels; corn 29.1 million bushels, down 4.8 million bushels; sorghum 900 thousand bushels, down 1.3 million bushels; and soybeans 5.5 million bushels, down 1.3 million bushels compared to a week ago.

Year to date: Wheat totaled 196.9 million bushels down 33.5 million; corn 1659.8 million bushels down 126.2 million; sorghum 144.2 million bushels down 10.4 and soybeans 1062.7 million bushels up 214.8 million. Crop marketing years begin June 1 for Wheat and September 1 for corn, sorghum, and soybeans.

In export news, South Korea purchased 4,000 tons of 14% Dark Northern Spring wheat, 1,000 tons of 14.5% Dark Northern Spring wheat, 4,000 tons of 10.5% soft white Wheat and 1,000 tons of 8.5% soft white wheat--all for Oct. 10 to Nov. 10 delivery. In total, South Korea purchased 10,000 tons of wheat.

In the futures close, Kansas City Sept Wheat was $3.47 3/4, down 2 3/4 cents.

Terminal Wheat bids, paid for truck delivery, included Kansas City, $3.63, down 3 cents; Minneapolis, $3.85 1/4, down 1 3/4 cents; Portland, $3.52 to $3.53, up 2 to 1 cent; St. Louis, $3.18, up 1 cent.

Terminal corn bids, U.S. No. 2 yellow, price paid for truck deliver, included: Kansas City, $1.88, up 3 cents; Minneapolis, $1.80 1/2, up 2 1/4 cents; southern Iowa, $1.95 to $2.03, up 7 to 4 cents; Omaha, $1.65 to $1.71, up 3 to 4 cents.

Terminal soybean bids, U.S. No. 1, price paid for truck delivery, included: Kansas City, $6.17, up 9 cents; Minneapolis, $5.66 1/4, up 3/4 cent; southern Iowa, $5.85 to $5.96, up 11 to 6 cents; central Illinois processors, $6.10 1/4 to $6.22 1/4, up 8 to 9 cents.

Kansas City Wheat prices Aug. 23, spot, fob track, included: No. 1 hard red winter wheat, ordinary protein, $3.98 1/4 to $4.18 1/4, up 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 cents; 12% protein, $4.08 1/4 to $4.21 1/4, up 2 1/2 cents; 13% protein, $4.12 1/4 to $4.23 1/4, up 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 cents; 14% protein, $4.15 1/4 to $4.25 1/4, up 2 1/2 cents. U.S. No. 2 soft red winter Wheat was $3.80 1/4 to $4 1/4, up 2 1/2 cents. U.S. No. 2 white corn was $1.85 to $1.87, unchanged.
