Showers, temps help soil moisture improveKansas Scattered showers and cooler temperatures throughout the state during the week ending Aug. 21 allowed producers 4.3 days suitable for fieldwork, with alfalfa cutting the main activity, according to the Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service, Aug. 22. Topsoil moisture was rated 12 percent very short, 27 percent short, 57 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 16 percent very short, 38 percent short, and 46 percent adequate. Ninety-four percent of the corn is in the dough stage, 2 points ahead of last year and 3 points ahead of the five-year average. Sixty-one percent of the corn is in the dent stage, 1 point ahead of last year but the same as the five-year average. Corn condition is rated 4 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 46 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Ninety-seven percent of the soybeans are blooming, 4 points ahead of last year and 1 point ahead of the five-year average. Eighty-four percent of the soybeans are setting pods, 1 point ahead of last year but 1 point behind the five-year average. Soybean condition is rated 2 percent very poor, 11 percent poor, 38 percent fair, 44 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Ninety-seven percent of the soybeans are blooming, 4 points ahead of last year and 1 point ahead of the five-year average. Eighty-four percent of the soybeans are setting pods, 1 point ahead of last year but 1 point behind the five-year average. Soybean condition is rated 2 percent very poor, 11 percent poor, 38 percent fair, 44 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Eighty-six percent of the sorghum has headed, compared with 77 percent last year and 82 percent for the five-year average. Thirty-one percent of the sorghum is in the coloring stage, compared to 22 percent last year and 34 percent for the five-year average. Sorghum condition is rated 4 percent very poor, 16 percent poor, 43 percent fair, 34 percent good, and 3 percent excellent. Pasture and range conditions are rated 8 percent very poor, 17 percent poor, 43 percent fair, 31 percent good, and 1 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies are rated 2 percent very short, 8 percent short, 87 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies are rated 2 percent very short, 9 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 9 percent surplus. Stock water supplies are rated 6 percent very short, 15 percent short, 78 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Date: 8/25/05
