Newell sheep sales report

St. Onge Livestock Co., Ltd., Newell Sheep Yards, Newell, S.D., reported receipts of 4,365 head Aug. 18, compared to 1,013 head last week and 3,959 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Sioux Falls, S.D.

This was the first major run of feeder lambs for the fall run. Compared to last week attractive quality feeder lambs sold steady to $5 higher. Lambs weighing 90 to 100 pounds sold steady, 70 to 90 pounds sold $2 to $4 higher, 100 to 116 pounds sold $4.50 to $5 higher. No test on lambs under 70 pounds due to light receipts last week, but a higher undertone was noted. Good and Utility slaughter ewes sold $1 to $2 lower while Cull ewes sold $4.50 higher. Many large consignments of feeder lambs offered. Buyer attendance and demand were good. Receipts were about 85% feeders, 6% slaughter ewes, 3% slaughter lambs, 3% replacement ewes and the balance was miscellaneous sheep and goats.

Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 and 2, 30 head, 44 lbs., 160.00; 51 to 53 lbs., 159.00 to 160.50 (159.61); 19 head, 54 lbs., 150.00 dirty; 60 to 65 lbs., 149.00 to 154.50 (152.15); 70 to 78 lbs., 134.50 to 146.00 (141.70); 22 head, 73 lbs., 129.50 full; 81 to 89 lbs., 125.25 to 136.75 (133.32); 61 head, 86 lbs., 123.25 short dock; 90 to 99 lbs., 119.00 to 125.25 (122.15); 100 to 109 lbs., 118.00 to 121.00 (119.71); 108 to 109 lbs., 110.00 to 110.50 (110.13) fleshy; 85 head, 111 to 116 lbs., 103.50 to 115.00 (108.03); 110 to 116 lbs., 95.75 black face. Medium frame 1 and 2, 80 to 85 lbs., 120.25 to 124.00 (121.61).

Slaughter lambs: 135 head, Choice Yield grade 2 and 3, 120 to 129 lbs., 99.50 to 102.25.

Slaughter ewes: 57 head, Good, Yield grade 2 to 3, 174 lbs., 46.00; 38 head, Good, Yield grade 2 to 4, 204 lbs., 44.00; 90 head, Utility, Yield grade 1 to 2, 148 to 160 lbs., 44.50 to 45.00; 47 head, Cull, Yield grade 1, 136 lbs., 41.75.

Replacement ewes: Open, Medium and large frame 1 and 2, 12 head, yearlings, 138 lbs., 130.00 per head; 36 head, 2 to 4 years old, 180 lbs., 60.00 cwt; 71 head, mixed age, 183 lbs., 46.25 cwt.

Aged bucks: 14 head, fleshy 263 lbs., 30.25.
