Shearer claims world record by shearing 513 sheep in nine hoursPERTH, Australia (AP)--A man claimed a new world record April 6 for shearing 513 ewes in nine hours. Shearer Dwayne Black, 31, averaged a merino ewe every 62 seconds to achieve the feat April 5 at Kojonup, 265 kilometers (165 miles) southeast of the Western Australia state capital Perth. Judges from the World Record Shearing Committee witnessed the New Zealand-born professional shearer surpass the previous record of 507 merino ewes set in 1997, as displayed on the World Sheep Shearing Records website. "I caught and dragged and shore about 30 ton of animal," said Black, who grew up in Esperance, a coastal town in southwestern Australia. Date: 4/21/05
