Veneman: No tentative agreement with JapanSPENCER, Iowa (DTN)--Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman on Sept. 15 flatly denied media reports that a tentative agreement has been reached between the U.S. and Japan on resuming beef trade. Veneman spoke at the Clay County Fair in Spencer, Iowa. "We have held numerous discussions with Japan, trying to reach an agreement to open the market," Veneman said. "We know buyers in Japan are anxious to get our product back." However, when asked if a tentative agreement was in place, Veneman said, "No." Veneman also was asked if the recent discovery of another BSE-infected cow in Japan would adversely affect the negotiations to reopen trade. "I don't think so," she said. She pointed out that the cow just discovered in Japan was over five years old, which actually supports the U.S. argument that "this disease doesn't manifest itself in younger animals." Date: 9/22/04
