Students, faculty receive awards from AAEANebraska Several University of Nebraska-Lincoln faculty and students received recognition recently from the American Agricultural Economics Association. During the association's annual meeting in August, Rik Smith of Laurel won first in the association's undergraduate research paper competition for his paper and presentation entitled "An Evaluation of Feedyard Management Training and Experience." His paper will be published in the American Journal of Agricultural Economics. Darrell Mark, UNL assistant professor and livestock marketing specialist, was Smith's advisor. Eight agricultural economics and agribusiness students competed in an academic quiz bowl against 40 university teams from across the United States and Canada. The team of Smith, Trent Blare, Ideal, S.D., and Zachary Hunnicutt, Giltner, placed third overall. The team of Jessica McCall, North Platte, Cody Lashley, Trenton, and Anneke Gustafson, Mead, was 15th out of 40 teams. Alternates were Colt Swanson, Wilcox, and Cheryl Halstead, Kimball. Mark and Emie Yiannaka, assistant professor of agricultural economics, coached the teams. A Nebraska Cooperative Extension program earned the Distinguished Extension Program--Group Award. Team members were Dave Goeller, beginning farmer program coordinator; Terry Hejny, extension educator; Doug Jose, farm management specialist; Bob Meduna, extension educator; and Roger Selley, farm management specialist. They received the award for their marketing education program called "Winning the Game." It is a series of grain marketing workshops that simulate real-life grain marketing decisions in a game format. This enables farmers to practice marketing without the risk of financial losses. Program partners include the University of Minnesota and County Hedging Inc. Date: 9/23/04
