St. Onge cattle auction report

The St. Onge Livestock Sales Co., Ltd., St. Onge, S.D., reported receipts of 3,057 head Sept. 17, compared to 2,190 head last week, and 2,084 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Compared to last week, 400- to 600-pound steer calves were sold steady to $2 higher. Heifer calves weighing 400 to 550 pounds sold $6 to $7 higher. Trends were not applicable on other weights due to light receipts. There was no trend on yearlings due to light receipts. Feeder receipts included 62% steers and 8% heifers with 16% over 600 pounds. Breaker and Boner cows sold $2 to $3 higher while lean cows sold steady. Slaughter bulls showing the effects of not working for awhile, sold $2 to $3 higher. A good number of high dressing bulls. Buyer attendance good with good demand for all classes. Receipts were about 87% feeders, 5% slaughter cows, 5% females back to the country, 2% slaughter bulls and the balance was feeder bulls.

Slaughter cows: Breakers, 75 to 80% lean, 1675 to 1929 lbs., 55.50 to 57.25. Boners, 80 to 85% lean, 1170 to 1655 lbs., 54.00 to 59.50. Lean, 85 to 90% lean, 1040 to 1460 lbs., 52.00 to 55.50; high dressing, 57.00 to 59.00; low dressing, 47.00 to 51.00.

Replacement females: Medium and large frame 1 and 2, 2 years old, 965 to 1155 lbs., 77.50 to 80.00; heiferettes, 970 to 1195 lbs., 62.50 to 69.50, fleshy individual, 1355 lbs., 61.50. Feeder cows, Large frame 1, 1383 to 1658 lbs., 54.00 to 59.50. Medium and large frame 1 and 2, 1100 to 1310 lbs., 55.00 to 60.00. Exposed cows, Medium and large frame 1 and 2, most thin, 1020 to 1336 lbs., 57.00 to 62.50; package younger, 1318 lbs., 63.25. Bred cows, Large frame 1, bred black, calve March 1, 40 head, short term black, 1421 to 1432 lbs., 835.00 to 845.00 per head.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 and 2, 1415 to 2445 lbs., 65.00 to 69.00; high dressing, 69.50 to 75.00; low dressing, 61.50 to 64.00.
