Senator Roberts announces $190,000 to KLA for groundwater protection testingWASHINGTON--U.S. Senator Pat Roberts Sept. 15 announced a $190,000 grant to Kansas Livestock Association Environmental Services, Inc. for groundwater protection testing in livestock facilities. The grant will fund continued use of new technology developed at Kansas State University to test the permeability of livestock lagoons throughout the state of Kansas. The new equipment provides the most accurate test of lagoons available as a proactive approach to groundwater protection. In conjunction with the Kansas Department of Health, facilities for testing are prioritized so those in sensitive groundwater areas are tested first. Throughout the testing, KLA will partner with Kansas State to make the technology more affordable to producers, to shorten the necessary testing time, and to identify lagoon improvement options. Senator Roberts said, "I am pleased to announce these funds for the Kansas Livestock Association. It is important to take progressive action to protect groundwater inKansas and to develop new technology for livestock producers." The funds were awarded by the United States Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service. The funds were made available by the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). Senator Roberts is a senior member of the Senate Agriculture Committee. He has been a strong supporter of voluntary conservation programs. Date: 9/23/04
