Nebraska celebrities earn their awards at state fairNebraska Eight Nebraska celebrities competed Sept. 6 for their chance at a Nebraska State Fair championship. Governor Mike Johanns, came away with the top prize at the eighth annual Governor's Celebrity Cattle Show claiming the champion showmanship award. Governor Johanns won the award for technical merit by demonstrating proper showing techniques. First lady Stephanie Johanns, earned the reserve champion showmanship prize. Other winners included: Miss Rodeo Nebraska Lyndy Quaney, grand champion heifer; Senator Arnie Stuthman, grand champion steer. Those winning less-than-serious prizes included: UNL bowling coach Bill Straub, showman who needs the most improvement; KRVN radio personality Joe Gangwish, showman and calf look-a-like prize; Senator Floyd Vrtiska, the sway back award; and UNL assistant bowling coach Paul Kempa, the newest showman award. Four 4-H counties and four FFA chapters assisted them. Participating 4-H counties included: Lincoln, Buffalo, Dawson and Box Butte. Participating FFA chapters included: Tri County, Lakeview, Logan View and Waverly. Ted Doane, retired University of Nebraska-Lincoln animal science professor, served as this year's official show judge. Date: 9/23/04
