NILE to host new peewee stampedeLittle buckaroos age 3 to 6 are invited to "cowboy up" at a new Peewee Stampede Stick Horse Rodeo at the NILE in Billings, Mont., this October. The Peewee Stampede is part of the 37th Annual NILE Stock Show, ProRodeo & Horse Extravaganza. There will be a total of six stick horse rodeos, three a day on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 15 and 16 in the Montana Pavilion at MetraPark. Performance times are 4:30, 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. daily, with each performance lasting about half an hour, according to officials at Cowboys & Kids, a non-profit organization producing the Stampede. Each performance will be limited to 30 kids. There is no pre-entry. Entries will be accepted at the event on a first-come-first-serve basis, with kids allowed to compete in one of the following: barrel-racing, bull-riding, steer wrestling, calf roping or bareback riding. Events will be assigned by the officials, although requests will be considered when possible. There is no entry fee, thanks to the sponsorship of Valley Federal Credit Union and New Northwest Broadcasters. Kids must be no younger than 3 and no older than 6. Instructions on how to compete will be given at the event, with no experience necessary. Contestants may bring their own trusty stickhorses and ropes, or the Peewee Stampede will provide them on-site. Western costume is appreciated, although not required. Cowboy hats and chaps will be available at the event for kids who don't bring their own. Cowboys & Kids, the organization producing the stick horse rodeos at NILE, is a non-profit association with an emphasis on character-building and appreciation of rodeo. Officials say the Peewee stampede is a hands-on method of instilling cowboy ways. It will provide old-fashioned fun, with small life lessons thrown in as a bonus, such as learning how to share, wait your turn, follow direction, pay attention, listen, be a good sport and respect others. The Peewee Stampede, along with most other NILE activities, is free to spectators. For more information about NILE activities, call 406-256-2495 or visit online at www.thenile.org. Date: 9/23/04
