Panama allows some U.S. beef

Untitled

PANAMA CITY (AP)--Panama has lifted some restrictions on U.S. beef, allowing the importation of products originating from animals no more than 30 months old.

Panama banned U.S. beef nearly a year ago after a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy was detected in the U.S.

On Oct. 13, Panama's Agriculture Ministry began allowing U.S. beef certified as coming from packing plants inspected by a veterinarian and killed after September 2004.

Although Panama raises most of its own beef, it does import some, and the U.S. is one of the main suppliers.

Younger cows are believed to be less likely to carry the disease, because they were born after a 1997 ban on feeding cattle protein or bone meal made from other cattle or other ruminants.

It was put in place because the most likely means for BSE to spread is by feeding livestock meal that contains nervous system tissue from infected animals.
