Newell sheep auction notes

St. Onge Livestock Co., Ltd., Newell Sheep Yards, Newell, S.D., reported receipts of 6,182 head Oct. 14, compared to 4,163 head last week, and 7,418 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Compared to last week, feeder lambs sold steady. Slaughter ewes sold steady to $3 lower with the Utility ewes selling steady. Buyer attendance was good with good demand for all classes of sheep. A few load lots were offered. Receipts were about 74% feeder lambs, 12% slaughter ewes, 9% replacement ewes and the balance was bucks, miscellaneous sheep and goats.

Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 and 2, 28 head, 47 lbs., 140.00 thin; 54 to 55 lbs., 137.00 to 138.50 (137.84); 61 to 66 lbs., 133.50 to 135.50 (135.25); 70 to 79 lbs., 118.00 to 128.00 (124.02); 501 head, 76 lbs., 130.00 fancy; 80 to 89 lbs., 109.00 to 120.00 (115.04); 581 head, 83 lbs., 122.25 fancy; 90 to 97 lbs., 102.75 to 109.00 (106.58); 100 to 101 lbs., 102.50 to 102.75 (102.68); 103 to 109 lbs., 93.75 to 94.25 (93.97) full; 114 to 116 lbs., 91.00 to 92.00 (91.66). Medium frame 1 and 2, 41 head, 54 lbs., 130.00.

Slaughter ewes: Good, Yield grade 2 to 3, 165 lbs., 42.00; 12 head, Good Yield grade 2 to 4, 196 lbs., 44.00; Utility, Yield grade 1 to 2, 145 to 151 lbs., 40.75 to 43.25; 125 head, Cull Yield grade 1, 131 lbs., 38.25.

Feeding ewes: Medium and large frame 1 and 2, aged, 153 head, 156 lbs., 42.50 cwt.

Replacement ewes: Open whiteface, Medium and large frame 1 to 2 per head, 37 head, yearling, 176 lbs., 151.00; 7 head, 2 years old, 159 lbs., 122.50; 26 head, 3 to 5 years old, 182 lbs., 88.00 fleshy; 247 head, 5 to 6 years old, 158 to 167 lbs., 80.00; 38 head, solid to short solid, 155 to 169 lbs., 67.00 to 77.00; 70 head, 6 years old, 138 lbs., 68.00 to 69.00; 98 head, short solid to broken, 133 lbs., 65.00 to 70.00.

Aged bucks: 11 head, fleshy 231 lbs., 33.50; 25 head, medium 217 lbs., 24.00.
