NMSU rodeo team dominates barrel racing at Gallup

New Mexico State University barrel racers led the women's rodeo team to first-place finishes in back-to-back rodeos in Gallup Oct. 8 and 9.

The NMSU women swept the top three places in barrel races at the Gallup/Grand Canyon Regional National Intercollegiate rodeo both days. Krista Norell of Meeker, Colo., won all-around honors Oct. 9 for the second time this season. Kayla Weiss of Great Falls, Mont., won the all-around Oct. 8.

The NMSU men's team finished in fourth place Oct. 8 and improved to second place Oct. 9. In regional standings, the NMSU women are in first place after three rodeos. The men are second.

Leading the Aggie men with first-place rides Oct. 8 were bullrider Justin Sanderlin of Morenci, Ariz., and bareback rider Clay Houston of Seminole, Texas, (tie).

NMSU's Wylene Penrod of Laveen, Ariz., won the barrel racing both days. Chelsee Byerley of Gallup was second both days. Whitney Robinson of Mesilla Park took third on Oct. 8. Norell tied for third Oct. 9.

Weiss was first in breakaway roping Oct. 8 and goat tying Oct. 9. Norell won the breakaway Oct. 9. Janelle Manygoats of Winslow, Ariz., was second Oct. 8.

Coming in second Oct. 9 were NMSU's Houston in bareback, Sanderlin in bullriding (tie) and Wacey Walraven of Datil in calf roping.

Team ropers Barry Gentry of Dell City, Texas, and Brian Bell of Fort Lupton, Colo., were second Oct. 8. Kody Gentry of Dell City teamed with Rene Rodriguez of the University of Arizona for a third Oct. 8 in team roping.

Daren Albrecht of Veyo, Utah, tied for third in bullriding Oct. 8. Fourth-place finishes Oct. 8 included Norell in breakaway; Bailey Gow of Roseburg, Ore., in goat tying; and Sterling Walker of Aztec in calf roping. Finishing fourth Oct. 9 was Clint Phillipps of Douglas, Wyo., in saddle bronc.

"We did well, all in all," said NMSU rodeo coach Jim Dewey Brown.

NMSU's next competition will be Oct. 29 and 30, when the team will host its fall rodeo in Las Cruces.
