McAlester livestock sales

The McAlester Union Stockyards, McAlester, Okla., reported receipts of 2,950 head Oct. 19, compared to 1,650 head last week, according to the USDA Market News Service, Oklahoma City, Okla.

Compared to last week, upper tier stocker cattle were $2 to $4 higher. Heavy steer calves steady, heifers $1 to $3 lower. Good attendance of buyers and active on trade. Quality was mostly average. Cattle were in thin to fleshy condition. Receipts were comprised of 47% steers, 42% heifers with 20% feeder cattle over 600 pounds. Slaughter cows and bulls were steady to $2 higher. Good attendance of buyers and active on trade, sending 45% receipts to packers. Moderate demand for very limited numbers of pairs and bred cows. A total of 250 cows and bulls sold with 45% going to packers.

Slaughter cows: Breakers, 11 head, 75 to 80% lean, 1225 to 1575 lbs., 51.50 to 54.50; low dressing, 46.50 to 50.00. Boners, 35 head, 80 to 85% lean, 1100 to 1500 lbs., 53.00 to 56.50; high dressing, 57.00 to 57.50; low dressing, 49.00 to 52.50. Lean, 25 head, 85 to 90% lean, 965 to 1300 lbs., 49.50 to 51.50; low dressing, 45.50 to 49.00. Light, 38 head, 85 to 92% lean, 650 to 925 lbs., 44.50 to 48.00; high dressing, 50.00 to 54.00; low dressing, 40.00 to 43.50.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 and 2, 15 head, 1375 to 1875 lbs., 64.00 to 66.00; high dressing, 69.00 to 71.00; low dressing, 60.00 to 62.00.

Replacement cows: Medium and large frame 1, 4 to 8 years old, 1050 to 1300 lbs., 2 to 5 months bred, average quality, 650.00 to 745.00; 8 plus years old, 1000 to 1330 lbs., 5 to 8 months bred, average quality, 625.00 to 695.00.
