Judd Ranch hosts fourth annual judging contestYouth tested their judging abilities on four classes of Gelbvieh Sunday, Oct. 10, when Dave and Cindy Judd of Judd Ranch Inc., Pomona, Kan., hosted their fourth annual junior judging contest at the ranch. The Judds handsomely rewarded the Top 3 individuals in the Senior and Junior Divisions with gift certificates redeemable on females in the sale: $250 for first place, $150 for second place and $100 for third place. Winners also received certificates suitable for framing, BEEF license plates, Judd Ranch caps and Judd Ranch gloves. "Hosting a judging contest such as this rewards youth for their expertise and interest in the beef industry and the Gelbvieh breed," states Dave Judd. "It's satisfying to watch the youth looking over the animals and developing their cattle evaluation and decision-making skills." Taking first place among Senior Division, youth 13 years and over, was Andrew Lindgren of Atlanta, Ill. Second place was earned by Kevin Hightower of LaCygne, Kan. and third place went to Ryan McKoon of Paola, Kan. First place among the 12 years and younger group went to Evan Woodbury of Quenemo, Kan. Tanner Bybee of Pomona, Kan., earned second place while Lance Lawton of Diller, Neb., walked away with third place. The youth judged two classes of Gelbvieh bulls and two classes of Gelbvieh heifers. The senior division delivered one set of reasons while the junior youth answered a set of questions worth 50 points. Judd Ranch annually hosts the junior judging contest the morning of their annual Cow Power Female Sale at the ranch.
