Uncooperative weather slows fieldworkKansas Fieldwork averaged 2.0 days during the week ending Nov. 21, and statewide cool, wet weather is slowing crop dry down and keeping producers out of the fields, according to the Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service, Nov. 22. Topsoil moisture was rated 9 percent short, 66 percent adequate, and 25 percent surplus. Ninety-seven percent of corn has been harvested for grain, 3 points behind both last year and the five-year average. Eighty-eight percent of the soybeans have been harvested, compared to 96 percent last year and 98 percent for the five-year average. Eighty-three percent of sorghum has been harvested for grain, 8 points behind last year and 12 points behind the five-year average. Seventy-nine percent of the sunflowers have been harvested, compared to 97 percent for both last year and the five-year average. Ninety-four percent of the Wheat has emerged, compared to 93 percent last year and 94 percent for the five-year average. Eleven percent of the Wheat acreage is being pastured, compared to 13 percent last year and 8 percent for the five-year average. Leaf rust on Wheat was reported in the central districts. Wheat condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 19 percent fair, 61 percent good, and 16 percent excellent. Thirteen percent of the cotton has been harvested. Cotton condition is rated 6 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 39 percent fair, 38 percent good, and 8 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies are rated 1 percent very short, 4 percent short, 79 percent adequate, and 16 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies are rated 1 percent very short, 6 percent short, 76 percent adequate, and 17 percent surplus. Stock water supplies are rated 2 percent very short, 15 percent short, 81 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Date: 11/24/04
