TAMU livestock judging team wins American RoyalTexas Texas A&M University's livestock judging team won the American Royal Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Contest on Oct. 23 in Kansas City, Mo. Texas A&M won the competition for the second time in a row by scoring 4,657 points. That was 38 points more than second-place Iowa State University. Texas A&M team member Brandon Callis of Needville had the highest individual score of 967 points. This broke the contest's record of total points scored by an individual. Ryan Rathmann, Texas A&M livestock judging coach, said another Aggie held the record prior to this year. "Kelton Mason (of Plains) broke the record last year," he said. "We've given him a hard time that his (record) didn't even stand a year. When he broke it, it had stood for like 60 years." Moriah Jennings of Mason and Cade Wilson of San Antonio helped Callis secure the Texas A&M victory. Jennings placed seventh and Wilson placed ninth overall. Brandon Garrett of Charleston, Ill., Aaron Cooper of Post, Ashlei Mason of Plains, Dustin Warren of Dumas, and Brandon Gunn of Sequin are also members of the winning team. The team, all college seniors, also won the competition at the Mid-South Fair in Memphis earlier this fall. It will defend its back-to-back national championships Nov. 15 at the International Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Contest in Louisville. Dr. Chris Skaggs, associate professor of animal science, coordinates the team. Date: 11/24/04
