OSU horticulture department to host poinsettia open houseOklahoma It is time for the Christmas lights to go up on the houses and other holiday decorations to come out of storage. Placing poinsettias around the home is another favorite way to decorate for the holiday season as well. Oklahoma State University is hosting a Poinsettia Open House on Nov. 30 to showcase the wide variety of poinsettias available, said Mike Schnelle, OSU Cooperative Extension Service floriculture specialist. The open house will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the OSU Research Greenhouses located at 1301 N. Western. "This open house is geared toward greenhouse growers and retailers, as well as those who are contemplating this profession," Schnelle said. "There will be more than 70 different cultivars displayed at the open house. This is an opportunity to let industry professionals know what is available now and what will soon be released to the public." Traditionally, poinsettias are red, but over the years, many new varieties have been developed. Schnelle said the open house will feature poinsettias in a variety of colors, plants with marbled bracts and those with variegated foliage. "What we'll showcase at the open house is a far cry from the plain red poinsettia," he said. "Individuals who are new to the industry and come to the open house will be amazed at the poinsettia varieties that have been developed over the past few years. There will be plants to go with just about any décor in your home." In addition, OSU research, teaching and Extension floriculture faculty will be on hand to share their expertise. The event is free of charge. For more information, please contact Schnelle at 405-744-7361, or e-mail at mike.schnelle@okstate.edu. Date: 11/24/04
