OSU Veterinarian takes over APHIS post

Oklahoma

Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture, Terry Peach, said recently that State Veterinarian, Dr. Burke Healey has resigned to accept the USDA-APHIS Veterinary Services position of Oklahoma Area Veterinarian In Charge.

The industry had speculated that Dr. Healey was a top contender for the position after Dr. Brian Espe retired from the post last June.

Peach congratulated Healey on receiving the position and said he looks forward to working with him on the federal level.

"We have mixed emotions about Dr. Healey leaving as the State Veterinarian," said Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture, Terry Peach. "He has done an outstanding job in representing our producers and working to protect the state's livestock and poultry industries. His leadership and counsel have been exemplary and he will be difficult to replace.

"On the positive side, having Dr. Healey representing our producers at the federal level will be a tremendous asset to us as well," he said. "He is respected throughout the United States and Mexico for his knowledge of animal health issues and his common-sense approach to dealing with these issues."

Healey said he has enjoyed working with Peach and will miss working as the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry's top animal health official.

"It was a difficult decision for me to leave the agency but I'm looking forward to working with the state office and maintaining the excellent working relationship between the federal and state offices," he said. "Both the state and federal animal health staff here in Oklahoma are excellent and we will continue to cooperate with each other the best way possible for our producers."

Healey's resignation is effective Dec. 11 and he will assume the federal position the following day. He has been State Veterinarian for the ODAFF since 1995.
