Wheat crop, corn planting progressingKansas Mostly sunny weather allowed an average of 6.1 days of fieldwork during the week ending May 9, with corn planting and alfalfa cutting the major activities, according to the Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service, May 10. Nighttime temperatures were near freezing in early May while daytime averages were near record highs later in the week. Topsoil moisture was rated 9 percent very short, 33 percent short, 53 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 26 percent very short, 30 percent short, 41 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Ninety-eight percent of the Wheat is jointed, compared to 97 percent last year and 95 percent for the five-year average. Sixty-three percent of the Wheat is headed, 9 points ahead of last year and 16 points ahead of the five-year average. Additional precipitation is needed after last week's wind and high temperatures. Wheat condition is rated 14 percent very poor, 22 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 30 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Insect reports indicate 66 percent with no infestation, 24 percent with light infestation, 8 percent with moderate infestation, and 2 percent with severe infestation. Pasture and range conditions are rated 14 percent very poor, 23 percent poor, 28 percent fair, 31 percent good, and 4 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies are rated 2 percent very short, 12 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies are rated 2 percent very short, 16 percent short, 75 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus. Stock water supplies are rated 12 percent very short, 18 percent short, 68 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Cattle continue to be moved onto pastures. Date: 5/13/04
