West Plains regional cattle sales

The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 3,600 head May 18, compared to 4,111 head last week and 2,484 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, steers and heifers were steady to mostly $2 higher, however, 650- to 700-pound steer yearlings sold $2 to $4 higher and 600- to 650-pound heifers were sharply $5 to $7 higher. Although the heavier yearling market was active and strong this week, there just weren't enough around last week for an adequate price comparison. Supply was moderate, with a higher percentage of yearlings starting to show, quality on calves not as attractive as last week. Demand was very good. The feeder supply included 53% steers and 47% heifers. Nearly 41% weighed over 600 pounds.
