Weather, soils improve thanks to weatherMinnesota Favorable soil and weather conditions for fieldwork helped farmers make rapid planting progress on most crops during the week ending May 2, according to the Minnesota Agricultural Statistics Service, May 3. April 28 was unseasonably hot, but the remaining days of the week were quite cool, which resulted in the average temperature for the week of 47.0 degrees, 2.6 degrees below normal. All except a few areas of the state received less than a quarter inch of precipitation. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies as of April 30 were rated 10 percent very short, 32 percent short, 57 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. An estimated 71 percent of corn acreage is planted compared with 64 percent for the same date last year and 46 percent for the five-year average. Soybeans are 11 percent planted, versus 9 percent a year ago and 8 percent for the five-year average. Spring Wheat is 72 percent planted compared with 65 percent last year and five-year average progress of 39 percent. Barley acreage is 56 percent planted compared with 33 percent for the five-year average. Oat planting is 84 percent complete versus 53 percent for the five-year average. Sugarbeets are 90 percent planted compared with the five-year average of 55 percent. Date: 5/5/04
