Value-added ag bill passes assemblyMissouri On April 29, the Missouri Senate truly agreed to and finally passed Senate Bill 740, dealing with value-added agriculture and a host of other issues important to Missouri agriculture. Because this omnibus ag bill passed the Missouri House of Representatives the previous week, it now goes to Governor Bob Holden for his consideration. The Missouri Corn Growers Association (MCGA) is pleased that the bill passed the General Assembly and praises the work of many rural legislators. "Senate Bill 740 makes significant improvements in Missouri's value-added agriculture programs," says Sam Creed, MCGA President and farmer from Fairfax, Mo. "The Missouri Corn Growers Association is very grateful to the hard work of many on the bill. We'd especially like to thank Senator David Klindt and Representative Brian Munzlinger for their leadership in proposing the value-added ag provisions included in the final omnibus ag bill. "Specifically, the value-added ag provisions of Senate Bill 740 will increase the state's value-added ag loan guarantee and allow for quarterly redemption of value-added ag tax credits. The result will be greater flexibility Missouri farmers who wish to participate in value-added ag ventures. Such ventures allow farmers working collectively in new generation cooperatives to process an ag commodity like corn into a finished product like ethanol. Passage of the bill is great news for farmers and rural Missouri!" Date: 5/13/04
