Wheat board sponsors workshopNebraska Fifteen producers, elevator operators and other Wheat industry representatives spent two days in Portland, Oregon last week, touring port facilities and learning about Wheat quality. The group was sponsored by the Nebraska Wheat Board (NWB) and hosted in Portland by the Wheat Marketing Center (WMC). WMC is an organization that links U.S. Wheat growers and international customers. The Nebraska Wheat Board is a member of the WMC. "This was a great opportunity for Nebraska Wheat producers to see where their Wheat goes when it is shipped to the Pacific Northwest," according to Pat Nelson, chairman of the NWB and a Wheat producer from Upland. "It was interesting to see how Wheat is milled, the tests that are performed on it to determine the quality and what classes of Wheat are used to make various products, such as crackers, bread and pasta. It was definitely a learning experience," she continued. A highlight of the tour was a visit to Columbia Grain International where a ship was being loaded for export. A 100 car train of hard red winter Wheat had just arrived that morning from Hemingford, Nebraska, which lent a Nebraska perspective to the visit. While at CGI the group had the opportunity to discuss grain receiving and loading with manager Randy Cartmill. Also included during the tour were briefings on the future of exports from Australia and the United States, and the grain trade perspective; a presentation on rail shipping from Burlington Northern; the role of the Federal Grain Inspection Service in Wheat exports; and a Wheat quality workshop. There were also visits to a bakery and a frozen dough facility. "We had great participation from producers and elevator managers, and the feeling was that this was a worthwhile venture," concluded Nelson. Date: 2/25/04
