West Plains cattle sale news
The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 5,000 head Feb. 24, compared to 4,523 head last week and 699 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.
Compared to last week, steers and heifers were steady to $2 higher, with the exception of 300-pound steer calves that were somewhat lesser quality this week and sold weak to $2 lower. The supplies were moderate to heavy. Demand was very good. Buyers were fairly patient on the start and were able to show their hand as the auction moved into the larger uniform lots and upper level quality. Fat cattle trade was inactive in all major feeding areas with very light packer inquiry. The supply included 53% steers and 47% heifers. Nearly 28% weighted over 600 pounds.
