Varied precip doesnt help already dry conditionsKansas Precipitation in most western areas of the state was light, with heavier amounts in the central and eastern districts, according to the February Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report. Topsoil moisture is rated 19 percent very short, 36 percent short, 38 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus. Wheat condition is rated 9 percent very poor, 18 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 38 percent good, and 4 percent excellent. Seventy percent of the state reported no wind damage to wheat, while 22 percent reported light wind damage, 6 percent reported moderate wind damage, and 2 percent reported severe wind damage. Some freeze damage has occurred, with 69 percent of the Wheat having no damage, 21 percent receiving light damage, 8 percent receiving moderate damage, and 2 percent receiving severe damage. Feed grain supplies are rated 3 percent very short, 14 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies are rated 3 percent very short, 16 percent short, 77 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Calving continues across much of the state. Date: 3/4/04
